IPPNW to share Haas peace award

IPPNW, the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA) and the International Peace Bureau (IPB) will receive the John and Chara Haas Award for International Peace and Social Justice on November 8, 2010, at the Nuclear Futures Conference in Philadelphia.
The Haas award, sponsored by the Project for Nuclear Awareness, is being given to the three organizations for their work on the World Court Project and “for their joint efforts to establish global consensus on the illegality of nuclear weapons.”
The World Court Project was a worldwide campaign that resulted in an historic 1996 advisory opinion about the illegality of nuclear weapons from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The ICJ concluded that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is generally illegal under International Humanitarian Law, and that states have an obligation to conclude negotiations on a global nuclear disarmament agreement to bring about their elimination.
According to PNA executive director Ed Aguilar, this year’s award is being given to the World Court Project “and those who participated as well in the drafting of the Model Nuclear Weapons Convention… to commemorate and honor the fact that the NWC and its basis in the ICJ Opinion of 1996 have been endorsed by the UN Secretary General and many nations since 2008, and in the NPT Review this May in New York.”
The previous recipients of the Haas Award, which honors those who have spent a lifetime in the cause of peace, safeguarding the environment, and in helping to reduce and end nuclear weapons, were author Jonathan Schell (2008) and Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission chair Hans Blix (2009).

Al termine della conferenza di Oslo, dove l’International Peace Bureau ha celebrato il centenario del suo Premio Nobel per la Pace, l’IPB per la prima volta ha eletto insieme, per la propria Presidenza, un uomo e una donna, che dirigeranno il Board per i prossimi 3 anni. Sept. 26, 2010, Oslo. At the end of a four-day conference in Oslo where the International Peace Bureau celebrated the centenary of its Nobel Peace Prize, the IPB for the very first time elected one woman and one man to jointly head the organization for the coming three years. This was considered an innovative way of meeting the many challenges confronting the organization. It is also the first time that a Norwegian is elected President of IPB. Ingeborg Breines, Director of the Nordland Academy for Arts and Sciences in Northern Norway and a former UNESCO director, is sharing the presidency with Tomas Magnusson, a former journalist and director of the Swedish humanitarian organization GI.

At the conference ’A Climate of Peace’, organized by IPB in cooperation with the Norwegian Peace Council, more than 100 representatives of the membership (320 organizations in 70 countries) were present. At the IPB Assembly 17 organizations were elected as new members; a sign that the organization is both relevant and robust.

”I look forward to contributing to the strengthening of IPB’s role in a world where the peace movement is more and more needed”, said Ingeborg Breines, Co-President, who brings a particular commitment to the realization of the vision of a culture of peace.

A series of important topics were discussed during the conference, not least the war in Afghanistan and the challenges of coordinating the growing opposition to an invasion and a war that step by step is losing all meaning. The nuclear threat was also prominently on the agenda, where the challenge for IPB is to help mobilize support both from civil society and governments in favour of the draft Nuclear Weapons Convention elaborated by a consortium of peace organizations.

Several testimonies, analyses and reports were presented during these days in Oslo, including on the lack of resources available to reach the Millennium Development Goals, whilst the world at the same time accepts growing military budgets involving unimaginable financial resources.

”It is only through disarmament and through the transfer of resources from military budgets to human development that we can reach the MDGs”, said Tomas Magnusson, Co-President.

La rocca di Lugo di Romagna

E’ stato il termine di un periodo difficile e convulso per la nostra Associazione. L’assemblea dei Soci indetta per il 27 febbraio scorso a Lugo di Romagna ha avuto un impatto molto più forte (e “vivace”) rispetto alle passate sessioni; ha bocciato il bilancio portato dal tesoriere della passata gestione, azzerato (e rieletto) il Direttivo, discusso (anche con l’apporto di Soci competenti in materia di regolamentazioni e associazionismo) su diversi temi tra cui l’adozione di un regolamento interno che si affianchi allo Statuto. E comunque, sperabilmente, gettando le basi per una gestione più rigorosa oltre che attenta alle esigenze di comunicazione verso i propri aderenti. Conclusa l’Assemblea il nuovo Direttivo si è riunito per la scelta del Presidente, Vicepresidente, Segretario generale e Tesoriere, i cui nomi si possono già leggere nel riquadro in colonna sinistra del sito.

A breve invieremo ai Soci il verbale dell’assemblea mentre sono in corso i necessari aggiornamenti alle mailing list che ospitano soci, membri del direttivo e del comitato scientifico (sarete avvisati al completamento delle operazioni). Per la necessaria approvazione del bilancio verrà indetta una prossima Assemblea.

Ai Soci e simpatizzanti cosa possiamo chiedere? Un poco di … pazienza e di fiducia.

E’ adesso finalmente terminata la “migrazione” nel nuovo www.ipb-italia.org di quanto era archiviato nel nostro vecchio sito.

E’ quindi di nuovo online la nostra storia, i dettagli delle nostre iniziative, a partire dal lontano 2003 in cui a Lugo di Romagna si ufficializzava la nascita della nostra associazione dopo un periodo in cui eravamo unicamente un “gruppo di lavoro” impegnato nella salvaguardia della ahimé defunta legge 185/90, quella che in Italia regolamentava il commercio delle armi…

Ripercorrere la memoria del nostro passato (adesso, ancora più avvincente attraverso le pagine del nuovo sito) può essere un modo per “rinforzarci” in vista dei nuovi impegni.

La notizia arrivata all’improvviso. Il prossimo 18 maggio avrebbe compiuto 70 anni. Ivano Barberini, grande amico di IPB-Italia, già presidente della Lega nazionale cooperative, si è spento a Modena questa mattina.
Il quotidiano “Il Resto Del Carlino” lo ricorda in questa pagina. Noi tutti ci stringiamo nel dolore insieme alla sua famiglia.
